Two ULFA rebels arrested

By IANS,

Shillong : Two top rebels of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) were arrested from the western part of Meghalaya bordering Bangladesh, an official said Friday.

Dergrah Saronia alias Ananda Das, one of ULFA’s central committee member, was arrested late Thursday from Chandaboi area in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills district, Border Security Force (BSF) spokesman Ravi Gandhi said.

He had sneaked in the country from Bangladesh, he added.

Based on Saronia’s revelation, BSF troopers arrested Sarango Patowary of the ULFA pro-talk faction from Berangpara near Chandaboi.

“Patowary was in the border area to receive Saronia. We are interrogating both of them,” the BSF spokesman said.

Meghalaya shares a 443-km border with Bangladesh, part of which is porous, hilly, unfenced and prone to frequent infiltration.

During the preliminary questioning, Saronia revealed that he was staying in Bangladesh’s Sherpur district. Both Saronia and Patowary have been handed over to Meghalaya Police.
