New Delhi : A retired Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) professor committed suicide by jumping from the seventh floor of the IIT building here Saturday, police said. No suicide note was found.
Ashok Kumar Sharma, a resident of Dwarka in south Delhi, jumped from the multi-storey main IIT building at Hauz Khas at around 12:30 p.m.
He fell beside Dongra Hall where students were celebrating Rendezvous 2011 – a cultural fest. “We came to know that one of our ex-professors had jumped. We saw him in a pool of blood,” said Rajnish Kumar, a student of the premier institution.
“We reached the spot and rushed him to the AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) Trauma Centre. Doctors declared him brought dead,” said a police officer.
Sharma was living with his wife at Dwarka while one of his daughters lives in Orissa. “His wife was away in Orissa and he was all alone,” said the officer.
