60 percent of Islamabad water samples test unsafe: Report

Islamabad : Nearly 60 percent of water samples collected from Islamabad have tested unsafe for drinking, a media report said Thursday.

The Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) has revealed that 59 percent of water samples collected from the capital tested unsafe.

In Rawalpindi, of the 1,125 water samples tested, 73 percent were found to be contaminated with coliforms, nitrate and higher levels of total dissolved solids (TDS), far beyond the prescribed standards of the Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA), Daily Times reported quoting the official APP news agency.

An estimated 44 percent of the Pakistani population does not have access to safe drinking water, while 90 percent of the population in rural areas lacks safe drinking water, according to PCRWR.
