11 proposals for semiconductor plant received

New Delhi: Proposals from 11 companies including domestic and foreign players to set up a wafer fabrication plant in India have been received, an Information Technology department official said Tuesday.

“The department has received proposal from 11 companies to set up a wafer fabrication plant in India,” P.S. Narotra, head international cooperation and electronics hardware industry in the communications and IT ministry, told reporters on the sidelines of Electronica India 2011.

“While some are domestic firms, there are foreign firms as well,” he added.

Earlier this year, the government had announced that it would provide Rs.25,000 crore for setting up of two wafer fabrication plant in the country.

The department has also formed a committee which will negotiate with companies and facilitate their investment by providing them favourable conditions.

The electronic hardware manufacturing in India slated to reach $155 billion by 2015 while the Indian semiconductor design industry is expected to provide employment opportunities to over 780,000 professionals.
