Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government Wednesday appointed retired Madras High Court judge K. Sampath to inquire into the police firing Sunday in Ramanathapuram district in which six people were killed. He is likely to give his report within two months.
The government issued a notification stating that a one-man commission would inquire into the cause and circumstances that led to the police firing at Paramakudi Sep 11 and the subsequent law and order disturbances, including damage to public and private property.
The commission would also ascertain whether appropriate force was used as warranted by the circumstances and whether all prescribed formalities were observed prior to opening fire.
The panel would also see whether any excesses were committed by the police and suggest action to be taken.
