Lucknow : Four children were mowed down by a truck in Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj district Wednesday, sparking violent protests by local people who attacked the police and targeted public property, an officer said.
The four children were crushed to death by the speeding truck in Gurshaiganj town. Demanding the arrest of the truck driver, locals pelted stones at the police and vandalised a police station.
“All the four children died on the spot. The situation is still tense. Efforts are on to defuse the matter,” Deputy Superintendent of Police S.P. Mishra told reporters in Kannauj, some 250 km from Lucknow.
“In the wake of violent protests, heavy security arrangements have been made in the town,” he added.
