Chandigarh : With the water levels in the reservoirs of the Bhakra and Pong dams crossing the respective maximum capacity marks Monday, authorities in Punjab have alerted downstream districts against floods.
“Beas and Sutlej rivers in Punjab witnessed increased discharge from Bhakra and Pong dams,” a spokesman of the irrigation department said here Monday.
“The water level at Bhakra Dam today (Monday) touched 1,680.93 feet water mark whereas its capacity is 1,680 feet. A total of 33,425 cusecs water was discharged from the Bhakra dam against the inflow of 31,530 cusecs,” he added.
The water level at Pong dam Monday touched 1,390.47 feet against a capacity of 1,390 feet.
The 225-metre high Bhakra dam and the Pong dam are on Sutlej and Beas rivers, respectively, and are located in neighbouring Himachal Pradesh, along the Punjab-Himachal border.
