In a letter written to the Indian government, Humane Society International (HSI) said H5N1 bird flu had been confirmed in two villages of Nadia district and guidelines by the World Organization for Animal Health should be followed.

“We support the use of nitrogen gases or barbiturate injection as first choices as these methods cause the least amount of pain,” said N.G. Jayasimha, campaign manager.

“We hope that India will take the necessary steps,” he added.

HSI claims that along with its partner organisations, it constitutes one of the world’s largest animal protection organisations and is backed by 11 million people.
