Rabbani’s killing reminder of dangers to Afghan peace: Manmohan

United Nations: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Saturday said the assassination of former Afghan president Burhanuddin Rabbani was “a chilling reminder” of the designs of the enemies of peace in Afghanistan.

Underlining the need for promoting the reconciliation process in Afghanistan, Manmohan Singh stressed that India will play its part in helping the Afghan people build a better future for themselves.

It is vital for peace and reconciliation efforts to succeed, Manmohan Singh said while addressing the 66th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Rabbani, chairman of of High Peace Council and the key Afghan interlocutor in talks with the Taliban, was assassinated Sep 20 by a suicide bomber who claimed to carry a peace message from the Taliban.

Law Minister Salman Khurshid Saturday represented India at a prayer ceremony in Kabul for Rabbani and conveyed the country’s solidarity with the people of Afghanistan.
