Coimbatore police arrests Maudany in another bomb case

By TCN News,

Bengaluru: PDP chairman Abdunnasir Maudany, who is presently in Karnataka jail in connection with the 2008 Bengaluru blast case, has been arrested in another bomb case in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Three from the Special investigation Team in Coimbatore last day went to Bengaluru jail and recorded the arrest of Maudany. They have also reportedly begun efforts to take him to Coimbatore with the permission of the trial court in Bengaluru.

The new case is related to the finding of explosives in the Coimbatore Press Club in 2002. The incident happened when Maudany was in the Coimbatore jail as an under-trial in the 1998 Coimbatore blast case, in which he was acquitted in 2007 after a jail term of more than nine years. The police reportedly explained that the bombs were placed in the Press Club to protest against the insult of Maudany’s wife Soofiya by the Coimbatore jail authorities, when she was visiting Maudany.

Two other Keralites – Noushad of Kozhikode and Shabeer of Ernakulam – were earlier arrested by the police in the case and the trial was completed, according to reports. A re-investigation was ordered later and Noushad was again caught by the Special Investigation Team. Maudany also has been named reportedly by this re-investigation. There are also reports that Maudany was arrested as per the testimony of Thadiyantavide Naseer, who is also accused in the case. Naseer is the prime accused in the Bengaluru blast case also, and his testimony reportedly led to Maudany’s arrest in that case. However, even after one year of his arrest, the police have not reportedly been able to produce any strong proof against Maudany.

The new arrest has come at a time when the Supreme Court is about to consider Maudany’s bail plea. Justice Markanteya Katju had spoken in favour of granting bail for Maudany in the case, but the two-member Bench was divided on the matter. Then the plea was transferred to another Bench and was postponed a few times. The case will again be considered on October 12, and Maudany’s family was reportedly in hopes of getting bail.
