PM appeals to parties to help pass economic legislation

New Delhi: Underlining the need to sustain 9 percent growth, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Tuesday appealed to political parties to work together to ensure the passage of key economic legislation in parliament.

Manmohan Singh also stressed that Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the retail sector would be allowed after a political consensus, and assured that any decision by the government on this front will not affect small retail traders in the country.

He was speaking to journalists aboard his special aircraft while returning from a 6-day trip to New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly.

The prime minister stressed on the need to pass economic legislation like the one seeking to increase FDI in the insurance sector, the pension reforms bill, the Goods and Services Tax Bill, the public procurement policy bill and the Lokpal bill.
