Chennai : A high alert was sounded at Tamil Nadu’s Kudankulam and Kalpakkam nuclear plants after the 8.5 magnitude earthquake in Indonesia’s Sumatra region.
Officials at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project in Tirunelveli, around 650 km from here, said they were on alert after the warning notice from the Hyderabad-based Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS).
“Our officials are on high alert. We are checking out whether any work is on near the coast,” an official of the Nuclear Power Corp of India Ltd (NPCIL) told IANS.
NPCIL is building two 1,000 MW atomic power project at Kudankulam in Tirunelveli district.
The situation was similar in Kalpakkam where NPCIL’s Madras Atomic Power Station (MAPS) is located.
“Operations are on without any hitch though we are on alert,” MAPS station director K. Ramamurthy told IANS.
