The mishap occurred at the site of Devas Project launched to supply water to all the lakes in Udaipur, a popular tourist destination, and nearby 100 villages. An 11.5-km water tunnel is being built under the project connecting a dam to several lakes in the city, over 400 km from here.

“After the change of shift in the afternoon, 13 labourers were going into a 50 metre deep tunnel using a lift. The wires connected to the lift suddenly snapped following which it hit the ground,” a police officer said.

A 50-year old labourer was killed on the spot, while 12 others were trapped. Police said that the lift was overloaded which led to the accident.

After a three-hour-long operation, the trapped labourers were rescued.
