Chinese law does not allow any grave — meaning the room to contain the ash box — to be larger than 1.5 square metres, the Shanghai Daily reported.

Officials found that the Qingzhuyuan cemetery in Shanghai was selling graves of about 10 to 20 square metres to boost sales.

The most “luxurious and spacious” grave was believed to be sold at three million yuan.

All income from the illegal sales would be confiscated, officials said.
