Jail breaks are common in Iraq. The Abu Ghraib prison, on the outskirts of Baghdad, became infamous after an abuse scandal by US soldiers.

The justice ministry said 11 “dangerous prisoners” dug down three metres and had tunneled along 20 metres before they were discovered.

The Iraqi government is concerned that Sunni militants will get a boost from the insurgency in neighbouring Syria, where Sunni rebels are battling President Bashar al-Assad.
