Peeved soldier refuses to end tower-top protest

By IANS,

New Delhi : An army soldier who climbed a 200-feet-high mobile phone signal tower here three days ago had not yet come down even Sunday, despite repeated appeals by police. The soldier, K. Muthu of the Engineers Regiment, climbed the tower in the evening of Aug 17 as he was apparently peeved at his senior officers.

Muthu, in his 30s, who was still atop the tower at Ajmeri Gate here, is deployed in Kota, Rajasthan. He was absent from his unit since July 7 without leave.

Army sources claim he has done the “Sholay stunt” earlier in Bangalore also.

The army is likely to order a court of inquiry into the incident soon and deemed action will be taken, sources said, adding that Muthu has sought voluntary retirement.

“He is embarrassing the force,” they added.
