“Acting on a tip-off, we intercepted a Mizoram-bound vehicle at Guwahati-Shillong road (on the National Highway 40) in Shillong and found over 50 kg of methaqualone crystals and 948,000 Actichid and Reobro tablets Saturday evening,” Commissioner of Customs (Preventive) G. Panmei told IANS.

Two people were arrested with the drugs and have been sent to judicial custody. Two others escaped and a manhunt is on to nab them.

“The drugs were smuggled from other states and were loaded in Guwahati meant to be smuggled out to Myanmar, from Zokhawthar under Mizoram’s Champhai district,” Panmei said.

Commissioner of Customs S.K. Chakraborty said methaqualone crystals are raw material for manufacturing Mandrax tablets, which is a synthetic drug and has been banned.

Actichid and Reobro tablets, Chakraborty said, contains pseudo ephedrine, which is the raw material for producing Amphetamine tablets.

Amphetamine tablets are also called “party drugs” as these induce great energy when taken as pills, injected, inhaled or smoked. These kind of drugs are particularly attractive to teenagers world over.
