“The Punjab government has temporarily withdrawn the LTC facility for one year from Sep 1, 2012 to Aug 31, 2013 of LTC block year 2010-13 under its austerity measures,” a state government spokesman said here.

However, the new order will not apply to government staff who are going to retire during this period.

The Punjab government is facing a severe resource crunch and has been forced to announce austerity measures. Much of the financial crunch is the result of populist schemes and subsidies to various categories announced by the government in recent years.

Payments through the state government treasury have been almost curtailed in the past couple of months due to the financial crunch.
