National bridge: Title holders Railways ‘A’ at tenth spot

Kolkata : Defending champions Railways “A” trailed at the tenth spot after round three of the Ruia Gold Cup team event at the 54th Winter National Bridge Championship here Sunday.

Unfancied Ajay Bagaria’s team from Kolkata – represented by Ajay Bagaria, Gobinda (Khoka) Sinha, Sudhir Ganguly, Prasun Mukherjee, Pinaki Khan and Sadhan Bose – now lead the field collecting 65 Victory Points (VPs) on the inaugural day.

Texan from Chennai are second with 64 VPs. Indian Blues and Jug Jwan, both from Mumbai, are at the third spot with 63 VPs.

Indian Railways, comprising veteran Manas Mukherjee, Sumit Mukherjeee, Sandip Dutta, Debabrata Mazumdar, Subir Mazumdar and Rana Roy, seemed off colour at the first three rounds when they scored only 50 VPs.

In the team event for Ruia Silver Trophy, in which lesser rated players are taking part, city-based Tapan Sirker’s IV are now leading with 69 VPs.

Two more rounds would be played later in the night at the Geetanjali Stadium.
