Chandigarh : Terming the suspension of its legislator Rana Gurjeet Singh from the Punjab assembly as “biased”, the opposition Congress in Punjab Wednesday announced that it would boycott the remainder of the session of the state assembly.
There was ruckus in the Punjab assembly Wednesday over remarks made by leaders in the opposition and on the treasury benches.
Both sides accused each other of using abusive and unparliamentary language.
The session was adjourned for some time by speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal.
Condemning the suspension of the Congress MLA from the assembly Wednesday, Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh expressed displeasure over the speaker’s decision, saying it was “biased”.
“It was actually the Youth Akali Dal president and Revenue Minister Bikram Majithia who was to be blamed for using unparliamentary language against Rana Gurjeet and Om Prakash Soni,” a statement by Amarinder Singh said.
Terming the suspension of Rana Gurjeet “unfortunate”, Amarinder Singh said the entire Congress party was behind the legislator and had decided to boycott the rest of the session in protest against the expulsion.
He blamed Atwal, a former deputy speaker of Lok Sabha, for not acting in an impartial manner.
Blaming Majithia for the ruckus in the house, Amarinder Singh said that he (Majithia), brother-in-law of Punjab deputy chief minister and Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal, was showing “all the attributes of a despot, exhibiting dictator-like arrogance, ambition and ruthlessness”.
