New Delhi : Maoist violence has been declining since 2011, parliament was informed Wednesday.
Minister of State for Home R.P.N. Singh told the Rajya Sabha that leftwing extremists — as Maoists are officially called — were active in Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh.
“The government is fully committed to effectively combating the (Maoist) insurgency,” he said in a statement.
The minister said the central government had a two-pronged approach. “It supplements the efforts of the state governments through security related and development related measures…
“It is the belief of the government that a combination of calibrated police action, focussed development efforts and improvement in governance are the required instrumentalities to effectively combat (Maoist) insurgency,” the minister said.
He added that “the results of this policy would be discernible in the medium term”.
