Rape case trials must end in two months: minister

By IANS,

New Delhi : As far as possible, trials in rape cases should be completed within two months from the day witnesses are examined, parliament was informed Wednesday.

Minister of State for Home R.P.N. Singh told the Rajya Sabha that this was necessary so that such trails do not unduly delayed.

Investigation in child rape cases should be completed within three months, he added.

The minister said the central government attached the “highest importance to the matter of prevention and control fo crime against women”.

He said the home ministry had in September 2009 told states to take steps to ensure that those found guilty of violence against women got “swift and salutary punishment”.

The states were also told to improve the quality of investigation, minimize delays in investigation of crime against women, and set up Crime Against Women Cells in districts besides special women courts.
