New Delhi : Security here was beefed up on the first day of the ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit 2012 Thursday with hundreds of para-military and police personnel keeping vigil at the venue and highrise buildings.

The two-day summit, Dec 20-21, is being attended by heads of state/government of Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, besides the ASEAN secretary general and the Indian prime minister.

A three-tier security arrangement was placed around Taj Palace Hotel, where the summit is going on and the Maurya Sheraton hotel, where some delegates are staying.

“The outer security has been handed over to Delhi Police and NSG teams, while the second layer includes a team of special officials, and the third layer is being handled in coordination with Delhi Police top brass officials and embassy officials,” said a senior police officer.

“High security is also in place along the routes taken by the cavalcade of these leaders,” said the officer. The luxury hotel where the 10 top leaders are staying has been turned into a virtual fortress.

“The floors above and below the suites where these leaders are staying have been kept vacant. Sharp-shooters of NSG have been deployed near Taj Palace Hotel, the Maurya Sheraton hotel as well as on the high rises on the route of their travel,” the official said.

Additional police control room vans and ambulances have been deployed near the hotels, the official said.
