Identified gang-rape accused sent to judicial custody

New Delhi : A court here Tuesday sent to 12 days judicial custody one of the Dec 16 gang-rape accused who had been identified by victim’s male friend during an identification parade. Another accused will undergo an identification parade Wednesday.

Metropolitan Magistrate Pawan Kumar sent Mukesh, brother of co-accused Ram Singh, driver of the bus, to Tihar Jail till Jan 6.

Mukesh had undergone an test identification parade. Another of the six accused, Akshay Thakur, who had been arrested from Aurangabad district in Bihar, is in judicial custody and will undergo the same procedure Wednesday in Tihar jail as he had given his consent for it.

“IO (Investigating officer) has requested for 14 days judicial custody. The investigation in the case is pending. Let Mukesh be produced on Jan 6, on the same date with other accused,” the court said.

Mukesh was produced before court Tuesday after the end of his three-day-long custodial interrogation.

Besides Mukesh, other four arrested in the case are Ram Singh, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta and Akshay Thakur. The proceedings against the sixth accused arrested in the gang-rape are being undertaken separately before the Juvenile Justice Board as he is a minor.

The six accused tortured and brutally gang-raped the woman, who is now battling for her life in the Safdarjung Hospital here.
