New Delhi : Illiteracy among prisoners in the Tihar Jail here has fallen from 40 percent in 2010 to 10 percent in 2011, Director General (Prisons) Neeraj Kumar said Tuesday.
Kumar attributed this to the “Padho aur Padhao” initiative undertaken in collaboration with the Department of Prisons and National Literacy Mission Authority of the ministry of human resource development.
The majority of the prisoners were educated below Class 10, he said, pointing to a clear link between education and crime.
“It is a path breaking initiative in correctional work,” said Kumar, who heads the country’s largest prison.
