New Delhi : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Monday asked the Delhi government to pay Rs.1 lakh to the kin of a Tihar Jail inmate who committed suicide after jail authorities failed to diagnose his prolonged ailment.
The commission dismissed the government’s argument that undertrial Ashok Kumar, 21, who hanged himself Dec 15, 2007, was given appropriate medical treatment by jail doctors.
“It is a clear case of medical negligence, apart from lapse on part of jail officials that enabled the prisoner to commit suicide,” an NHRC statement said.
The commission has also asked the chief secretary to submit a compliance report by Feb 25.
