UAE bans groundwater export

By IANS/WAM,

Abu Dhabi : The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Sunday banned the export of groundwater in view of depleting resources and in keeping with a parliamentary recommendation.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the ministerial council for services under the chairmanship of Deputy Prime Minister and minister for presidential affairs Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The Federal National Council, the country’s parliament, had recommended the ban after a study by the ministry of environment and water.

The study showed a decline in underground water levels in the country and the depletion of water resources as a result of exports.
