Agartala : Over 40,000 activists and leaders of the Youth Congress Wednesday courted arrest in Left-ruled Tripura as part of their civil disobedience agitation against the growing unemployment and rising crimes against women in the state, a protestor said.
The arrested workers were later let off.
Several highways, including some portions of the Assam-Agartala national highway, were closed till afternoon, causing hardships to people.
According to police, the agitation organised in 23 sub-divisional towns was peaceful.
“In view of the massive security arrangements and close supervision of the senior police officials, no incident or violent act was reported from anywhere in the state,” police spokesman Nepal Das told reporters.
Tripura Youth Congress president Sushanta Choudhury said: “The one-day movement was to protest the Left Front government’s failure to provide employment to the educated youths, besides nepotism, rising crime and atrocities against women in the state.”
“At present, the state has around six lakh educated unemployed youth,” he said.
