New Delhi : A teenaged car cleaner’s joy ride in a central government official’s vehicle left two morning walkers dead in south Delhi Monday, police said. The cleaner was arrested. One of the victims’ daughter was to get engaged later in the day.
Manish, 19, accompanied by three friends, was driving the car at a speed of about 100 km an hour near the Gulmohar Park neighbourhood when it hit the victims and crashed into a tree around 6 a.m. He was later arrested from his house in south Delhi’s Shahpur Jat area.
His friends, two of them minors, were also detained from the same area and released after medical check.
The men who were run over have been identified as Sultan Singh (50), whose daughter was to get engaged Monday, and Raghu Verma Raja, in his 40s, who had come to the city from Bangalore to attend the ceremony.
The accident, the second case of rash driving in south Delhi in two days, was reported on the August Kranti Marg, opposite the Kamla Nehru College bus-stop.
The two victim’s in Monday’s incident were rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Trauma Centre where they were pronounced ead.
The car (DL 2C AL 7285) is registered in the name of Isha Shrivastava, wife of external affairs ministry official Kartik Pandey.
Manish told police that he took the car for cleaning and was joined by his three friends, who told him to drive the car, an official said.
“As soon as he came on road, the car crossed 100 km an hour speed. He could not control the car and rammed it into a tree after hitting the victims. Before the accident the car swerved and struck the road divider,” said the police official.
After the incident, Manish along with his friends fled from the spot leaving the car there.
He left the key of the car key at the vehicle owner’s house and fled to his house without informing him about the incident.
In the meantime, police traced the car owner and informed him about the incident. The car owner claimed that his car was not present at his house,” said the official.
“One of the other car occupants has been identified as Mahesh, in his early 20s. The name of the other two cannot be revealed as they are minors,” he said.
In Sunday’s accident a speeding Lamborghini sports car crashed into a bus stop’s railing after hitting a cyclist. The driver, a real estate tycoon’s son, died on the spot. The cyclist has suffered paralysis.
