Jail, 100 times bribe fine for two policemen

New Delhi : Two policemen who demanded a bribe of Rs.100 from a commuter bus driver were sentenced to a jail term and fined 100 times the bribe amount by a special court here Friday.

Special Judge N.K. Sharma sentenced Additional Sub-Inspector Vikram Singh and constable Vikram Singh of one-and-a-half years rigorous imprisonment and fined them Rs.10,000.

“They, by corrupt and illegal means, abused their official position as public servants and obtained pecuniary advantage of Rs 100,” said the court.

According to the prosecution, the two had Feb 7, 2004 demanded Rs.100 from complainant Satish Gupta to allow his vehicle to ply through Kodia Pul Bus Stand in old Delhi.

Gupta said that the duo also threatened him to fine him if the bribe was not paid.

Gupta then approached the anti-corruption branch and lodged a complaint.

A trap was laid and Gupta given a Rs. 100 note treated with a chemical and a recording device was attached with him to caught the accused red-handed while taking the bribe.
