Consult minorities on NCTC: Sikh group

By IANS,

Amritsar : After objections raised by chief ministers of some states against the proposed anti-terror hub, a Sikh organisation Sunday demanded that minorities and civil liberty organizations also be consulted before the new body is set up.

In a letter to Home Minister P. Chidambram, radical Sikh organisation Dal Khalsa said that the proposal to set up the National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC) as a superior organization of security and intelligence bodies was fraught with danger.

Dal Khalsa political secretary Kanwarpal Singh said that the NCTC could be “used to stifle the voice of those who question” the central government.

The letter stated that there were a string of security and intelligence agencies and having another one above them was not warranted.

“Instead of going for the creation of a new ‘anti-terror super body’, the UPA government should evolve methodologies for peaceful conflict resolution thereby removing the very cause for violence as well as making the existing security and intelligence agencies accountable to people and the Parliament,” it said.
