“It appeared to have been caused by a grenade lobbed from a distance,” a police officer said, quoting eyewitnesses.

“The incident took place around 6.15 p.m. Eyewitnesses told us that a grenade was lobbed from a black Tata Safari vehicle. The grenade exploded near the ATM of the Punjab National Bank in Ganeshguri area,” the officer said, adding that a private vehicle which was parked nearby was also damaged in the blast.

“We suspect that the militants must have tried to attack the security personnel who were busy frisking at a nearby check-post,” the officer said.

Ganeshguri is a market area located about two km from the high security Assam capital complex at Dispur.

Police said that the causalities could have been higher if it was a normal day. There was not much of a crowd in the area Tuesday as a 24-hour bandh called by 11 trade unions had crippled normal life in Guwahati and other parts of the Assam.

Offices, marketplaces and commercial establishments remained closed for the whole of the day due to the strike and it was only in the evening that a few of them had opened their shutters.
