State Election Commissioner Neela Satyanarayan also announced Feb 7 as the date for elections to 27 Zilla Parishads across the state.

She said the model of conduct would be enforced from Tuesday in all the areas going to the polls on these dates.

Besides the BMC, Thane, Nagpur, Pune, Nashik, Ulhasnagar, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Solapur, Akola, and Amravati municipal corporations will go to the polls Feb 16.

Satyanarayan said that those municipal commissioners who can complete the counting the same day (Feb 16) will be allowed to do so, or they can start the counting of votes the following day (Feb 17).

Since it is spread over a huge geographical area with a population of nearly 17 million, the BMC is likely to carry out the counting Feb 17, official sources indicated later.

In the elections to 27 Zilla Parishads scheduled Feb 7, counting shall be carried out simultaneously Feb 8, she added.

The last date for filing nominations for the municipal corporation elections will be Jan 31, while for Zilla Parishads it will be Jan 23.

The announcement comes barely a fortnight after elections were held in around 200 smaller civic bodies around the state in mid-December.
