Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Muslim youths, who were implicated in Mecca Masjid blast case but later acquitted by court of all terror charges, will get compensation amount and character certificate from Andhra Pradesh Government at a function on Friday. As many as 70 youths were arrested, tortured and implicated in the case after the deadly blast of May 2007. However, controversies are erupting around two issues: Many victims are not included in the list; and Chief Minister has decided to skip the function.
The Andhra Pradesh government has issued a memo (No. 2451/V&C/A1/2011) in this regard on 3rd January 2012, listing the 70 youths. Of them, 66 will get the benefit as some criminal cases are pending against four.
The compensation would be paid to these innocent youths on Friday at 4 P.M. in Jubilee Hall, Public Gardens. They youths have been divided in two categories.
According to the memo, 16 youths are going to get compensation amount of Rs 3 lakh each. There are four youths who are included in this category but the compensation to them will be considered after some more criminal cases pending against them are dismissed by the court. The rest 50 Muslim youths, who were Interrogated /Detained/Arrested/ Let Off, by the police, are going to get the compensation amount of Rs 20,000 each.
Orders have been given to the commissioner of police to identify those Muslim youths in the list and to invite them to the program being organized by state ministry of minority affairs. The district collector has been asked to see and manage all the necessary arrangements for the function.
The state Government has sanctioned an amount of Rs 70 lakh and the disposal work is being given to A.P. State Minorities Finance Corporation (APSMFC). The program is going to be organized under the chairmanship of the Managing Director, A.P.S.M.F.C. Minister of minority affairs, Mr. Mohd Ahmedullah will give the compensation amount and the good character certificate will be issued by him to the youths.
Many victims not included in the list
It is said that many Muslim youths who were arrested by the police in the bomb blast case are not included in the list. For example, Mohd Imran Khan, who was engineering student, was arrested by the police in connection with the blast. He spent 18 months in jail, but his name is not included in the list.
Why CM skipping the event?
Controversy is erupting on the news that Congress chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy has decided to skip the program. It has surprised many in Hyderabad, because all this “confidence building measure” of the government is happening on his orders and he decided not to attend the program. After the announcement of the compensation program by the government in November 2011, chief minister Reddy came under criticism by his MLAs and Ministers because they feared the move by the CM to provide compensation to one time terror accused will hamper their Hindu vote bank and would allow BJP who is gaining ground in the state to play their politics. Many are believing the chief minister might have succumbed to the pressure from his colleagues in the government and is trying to make it a low key affair so that it won’t attract the attention of lot of people in the state and thus to make it more assessable to the targeted audience by the particular media.
