Islamabad : A petition seeking halt to the memo commission’s proceedings has been filed, contending that it was parliament’s right to probe the president and the commission’s notice to Asif Ali Zardari was thus unconstitutional, Geo News reported.
Petitioner Shahid Orakzai in his plea has also said that the chief justices of Sindh and Balochistan high courts, members of the commission, have exceeded their limits, and, therefore, an order to halt the proceedings of the commission be issued.
Pakistani-American businessman Mansoor Ijaz claims to have handed over a memo to the then US military chief Gen. Mike Mullen at the behest of the then Pakistan ambassador to the US Husain Haqqani and the government to avert a likely military coup which President Zardari feared following Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden’s May 2 killing at Abbottabad near Islamabad.
Pakistan’s Supreme Court set up a three-member commission headed by Chief Justice of the Balochistan High Court Justice Qazi Faiz Isa to investigate the memo issue.
Besides the judicial commission, a 17-member parliamentary panel — Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS) — is also investigating the memo issue.
