“What kind of politics is this that teachers and principals are being beaten up and harassed by the students. It’s shameful and I condemn such kind of attacks,” Mahasweta Devi said.

In the last one month, there have been numerous incidents of students affiliated to either Trinamool Congress or the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) assaulting principal and teachers of various educational institutions across the state.

The Mamata Banerjee-led government has drawn severe criticism from all quarters of society after it took a dual approach in dealing with accused in the incidents according to their political affiliations.

Mahasweta Devi, who had backed Banerjee against the erstwhile Left Front, had earlier termed the West Bengal government “fascist”, prompting the chief minister to say that the writer was “misinformed and misled”.

Later, the Magsaysay Award winning writer-activist stated that her remark was not targeted at the chief minister.
