Clerics from both sects voiced their concern over the violence. Sunni cleric and Imam, Aishbagh Eidgah, Maulana Khalid Rasheed Farangi Mahli termed it as a direct assault on the Sunni Muslims. He visited the affected area and met the victims whose houses and shops were ransacked during the violence. “Sunnis are made victim during such violence. Police should take action against the perpetrators of the crime,” he said. Later, a delegation led by Farangi Mahli and Sunni Board of India met the District Magistrate (DM) AK Sagar and apprised him about the situation. They also demanded early arresting of the culprits.

On the other hand, spokesperson, All India Shia Personal Law Board (AISPLB) Maulana Yasoob Abbas blamed the local police for the violence. “As I got to know about the violence, I reached the spot and pacified the crowd,” he said. Yasoob also remained critical of other clerics stating that they did nothing to control the violence but remained indoors.

Violence had erupted near Eveready Crossing in Nakhas locality of old city on the occasion of Chehallum. The violence erupted when one Faiyaz Haider tried to take out an Alam from new route which was not permissible. The violence was near the Masjid Hamid in Dariyapur locality at the Eveready Crossing. The heavy police force prevented the situation from turning worse.

Meanwhile, police registered a case against Haider and hundreds of others for instigating the violence. No arrest has been made so far in the incident. Flag march by security forces continued on the second day to restore normalcy.
