Lucknow: The name of Manyavar Sri Kanshiram Ji Urdu Arabi-Farsi University in Lucknow is likely to be named after famous saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti of Ajmer . The university was established by Mayawati in 2009 was named after BSP’s founder late Kanshiram.
When Samajwadi Party (SP) assumed power in the state, it was being assumed that the name of this university will be soon changed. Cabinet minister Azam Khan had sarcastically stated on several occasions that he was surprise to learn that Kanshiram was a scholar of Urdu, Arabic and Persian. However Azam Khan did not come into picture and the written work was done by Chief Secretary Javed Usmani who had set the ball rolling ihn communicating with VC of the university over the issue.
Finally state government asked the university Vice-Chancellor Anis Ansari to provide alternative names. The names given by Ansari includes Amir Khusro, Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, Allama Iqbal, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Mirza Ghalib, Shibli Nomani, Sant Kabir, Habeeb-ur-Rehman Azmi and Abdul Majid Daryabadi.
It is likely that state government will settle for Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti.
Meanwhile BSP leader Naseemuddin Siddiqui getting news about such development raised the issued in legislative council. In his speech Siddiqui stated that Kanshiram was a visionary and he did his primary schooling at an Islamia School in Ropar district of Punjab. Siddiqui also stated that he still has some letters which were written by
Kanshiram to him in urdu.
Another twist has been added to this name change story. Syed Zainul Abedin Ali Khan claiming to be Sajjada Nashin of Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti has stated in a release that state government should desist from naming the unversity after the sufi saint. “The issue has turned political. Once the name is changed it will be start a fresh controversy. We do not want that Khawaja Saheb’s name is dragged in any controversy,” said Syed Zainul Abedin in a written statement.
However he is open to the idea of constructing a new university in the name of Khawaja. “Everybody is equal at the dargah of Khwaja’s Dargah. We do not want any acrimony. If it is a new university, we welcome it,” he said.
On the ground level the said university is far from functional. The university failed to get completed during Mayawati tenure. In the new SP government the funding of the university has been stopped.
