Bengal institutions deny Team Sangma’s allegation

By IANS,

Kolkata: Even as presidential candidate P.A. Sangma’s team claimed that UPA Pranab Mukherjee held two offices of profit in West Bengal when he filed nomination for the top post, the authorities of both institutions asserted that the allegations had no merit.

Janata Party chief Subramaniam Swamy told reporters in Delhi Saturday that Mukherjee held two offices of profit as vice president of the Birbhum Institute of Engineering and Technology (BIET) and as chairman of Rabindra BharatiSociety, which runs the Rabindra Bharati University.

However, general secretary of Rabindra Bharati Society N. Kumar Seal told IANS that Mukherjee sent in his resignation from the chairmans post June 20 to its working president Sujit Kumar Basu.

“We accepted it the very next day. And ours is a nonprofit voluntary organisation. All posts are honorary.”

Mukherjee had filed his nomination for the country’s highest office June 28.

Ramchandra Dom, secretary of the Birbhum-based Indian Centre for Advancement of Research and Education (ICARE) said Mukherjee was never associated with BIET.

He was associated with ICARE which is the affiliating body of BIET. However, he stepped down from the vice-president’s post of ICARE before contesting the Lok Sabha polls from Jangipur in 2004, Dom told IANS.
