Kolkata: Murshidabad District Committee of Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has called for a 12-hour general strike in Murshidabad on July 11, 2012 to protest the work stoppage at the Murshidabad Campus of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

SDPI state President Taidul Islam, SDPI State Secretary Masudul Islam and SDPI Murshidabad District Committee President Zakir Hossain, SDPI district Secretary Rahid Hossain Mondal jointly announced a 12-hour Bandh in Murshidabad on July 11, in a Press Conference at District Journalist Association Hall, Baharampur on Monday. Due to rehabilitation dispute, construction work has come to a halt at AMU campus in Murshidabad.
SDPI leaders had earlier given an ultimatum to the District Magistrate to start work on AMU campus by July 10th but given that district administration shows no interest in restarting the work, SDPI has given the call for the general strike or bandh.
SDPI state president also said, SDPI has tried to get Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s attention on the the AMU campus working progress through submitted memorandum but without any luck.
SDPI has already started campaigning to garner support for the strike. Posters have appeared in Baharamapur and rural areas of Murshidabad. Besides posters, SDPI has also organized street corner meeting in favor of the stike, said SDPI district officials of Murshidabad.
