Rabat : The Moroccan government Monday declared the Syrian ambassador to its country persona non grata in the wake of last week’s carnage at Syria’s Traimseh town. In a tit for tat action, Syria retaliated with Damascus announcing the Moroccan envoy to Syria unwanted in the country.
In a statement issued from its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Morocco announced Nabih Ismail, the Syrian ambassador in Rabat, “persona non grata” while asking him to leave the country, Xinhua reported.
The country also asked the international community for a firm action to facilitate a “political transition in Syria” and help preserve Syria’s “unity and stability”, the statement added.
The Morocco government also urged the international community to assume its responsibility and put more pressure on the Syrian government, in the hope of ending violence and protect civilians in Syria.
The action was in response to a carnage that hit the Syrian town of Traimseh last week, the report said.
In retaliation, the Syrian Foreign Ministry later announced the Moroccan ambassador to Syria as “persona non grata”.
The ministry said in a statement that Mohammad Ikhsasi is persona non grata in Syria as of July 16. It said the decision came in response to a similar move by Morocco.
