Jamia residents block Delhi-UP highway protesting against arrest of Zubair Khan

New Delhi: Hundreds of residents of Jamia Nagar and Shaheen Bagh area came out on the road this noon and blocked the busy Delhi-Noida highway for four hours causing traffic jams for several kilometers. They were protesting against the picking of Zubair Khan for allegedly spying for Pakistan.

Khan was picked Tuesday noon from Shaheen Bagh area allegedly by Crime Branch of RK Puram police station. When he did not return home late night, the family members came out searching for him. Around midnight they reached local Jamia Nagar police station which first feigned ignorance but later confirmed his arrest by RK Puram police.

Khan belonged to Kakrala area in Badaun district of Uttar Pradesh. He was working as a property dealer. The police have picked him for allegedly spying for Pakistan. The family members have refuted the charge.

Jamia Nagar residents woke up this morning to the news of arrest of Zubair Khan. While a group of residents gathered at Jamia Nagar Police station and blocked the local road, a bigger crowd spilled over on the Delhi-Noida highway crossing Sarita Vihar area. A big contingent of armed police was deployed to control the situation.

Khan, 36, had done BA from Jamia Millia Islamia. He did MA in Theology from Aligarh Muslim University and then MA in Urdu Literature and Mass Media from Jawaharlal Nehru University.

Local residents and human rights activists have described the arrest as the part of the ongoing series to implicate Muslims in fake cases.
