Hyderabad : The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Tuesday night decided to abstain from voting in the presidential election scheduled to be held on Thursday.
The main opposition party in Andhra Pradesh decided to stay away from the polling to maintain equidistance from both Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
TDP chief N. Chandrababu Naidu, in a statement, said UPA candidate and Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee was unacceptable to his party as it has been fighting the anti-people policies of Congress party for last three decades.
The former chief minister said the TDP was also not ready to extend support to P. A. Sangma, backed by “communal” BJP-led NDA.
The TDP has 11 MPs – six in Lok Sabha and five in Rajya Sabha.
It has 86 members in Andhra Pradesh state assembly.
