One killed in Mumbai monorail project site accident

Mumbai : At least one person was killed and five others were injured when a slab of the under-construction monorail crashed in a slum area late Thursday, officials said.

The accident happened around 9 p.m. when the slab collapsed in the Shantinagar slum area in Wadala East, trapping six people under the debris.

One was killed on the spot. The injured were taken to the Sion Hospital where the condition of one victim was said to be serious.

Fire brigade and rescue teams were at the spot engaged in relief and rescue operations, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation city disaster control centre.

The city’s first 20-km long monorail project of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority is being contructed between Chembur-Wadala and then Wadala-Jacob Circle at a cost of nearly Rs.2,900 crore.
