Assam toll is 12, curfew continues

By IANS,

Guwahati: The death toll in the communal violence in Assam rose to 12 Sunday with police recovering three more bodies.

The situation remains tense in lower Assam’s Kokrajhar district even as additional forces were deployed to help the police maintain law and order.

The night curfew (6 p.m. to 6 a.m.) imposed Friday was on, said an official.

“We recovered three more bodies from near the Gourang river in Kokrajhar this morning,” Deputy Commissioner Donald Gilsellon told IANS.

“The 12 killed include members from both the Bodo community and a religious minority,” he said.

There has been no fresh incident of violence, Gilsellon said.

He said six companies and two platoons of central paramilitary forces has been deployed along with police battalions.

According to official sources, the violence started after gunmen attacked two student leaders — Mohibul Islam and Abdul Siddique Sheikh — in Magurbari Thursday night.

Following the incident, four former Bodi militants were shot dead Friday night. Another five people, including a 14-year-old boy, were killed in the district Saturday.

Assam Transport Minister Chandan Brahma has announced Rs.3 lakh as compensation to the next of kin of the dead and Rs.50,000 to those injured in the violence.
