Lucknow : An Assam Police team Tuesday left for Guwahati with Amarjyoti Kalita, the prime accused in the Guwahati molestation case, after taking his custody from Uttar Pradesh Police in Varanasi city where he had surrendered, officials said.
Officials told IANS that Kalita, who surrendered at the Lanka police station Monday, was taken to a city court to complete formalities of the transit remand.
After this, he was handed over to the Assam Police team, which later left for Guwahati by a train.
Kalita, an employee of Amtron, the IT agency of Assam government, was sacked on July 10 last after his involvement in the July 9 GS road molestation came to light. In the video footage, it was clear that Kalita took lead role and instigated others to stripe the girl.
Assam Police had formed the SIT to investigate the case and the government had asked the CID to supervise the whole investigation.
A total of 17 people involved in the molestation have so far been identified based on video footage of the incident and 14 of the identified were already in police net. A TV journalist, whose role was also alleged in the incident for instigating the crowd to strip the victim girl in public by activist Akhil Gogoi, was arrested by police earlier.
