Kolkata : As West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress won elections to four civic bodies, opposition Left Front Wednesday hailed its sole victory in the Haldia municipality as an answer to the “politics of terror”.

“On the day of election, Trinamool supporters resorted to rampant violence, especially in the areas under Pashkura, Haldia and Durgapur municipality. They had tried to terrorise the masses,” said a Left Front statement.

“The Trinamool had taken up the tactics of silent terror to bully the opposition. The win in the Haldia municipality has proved that the people have given a answer to the politics of terror,” it said.

Elections to six civic bodies in the state were held Sunday and the results were declared Tuesday.

Trinamool won in the Dhupguri municipality in Jalpaiguri, Durgapur Municipal Corporation in Burdwan, Panskura municipality in East Midnapore and Nalhati municipality in Birbhum.

The Congress won in Cooper’s Camp municipality in Nadia.

“Even after the Left had won the Haldia civic board, Trinamool supporters are attacking Left supporters and workers. The Jalpaiguri district Left Front needs to introspect and find out the reason behind the defeat in Dhupguri,” the Left Front statement said.

The Haldia civic body was of importance since it is located near Nandigram, where Trinamool led a successful protest movement that helped it rally support among rural voters of the state in last year’s assembly election.

Although the Left Front managed to retain Haldia, it tasted defeat in Dhupguri and Durgapur after 15 years.

Trinamool retained Panskura and also won in Nalhati — which was seen as a prestige fight for local legislator Abhijit Mukherjee, the son of Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

Trinamool and Congress, allies in the central and state governments, had fought separately in the civic body polls for the first time after the assembly election.
