Agartala : The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) politburo will meet in New Delhi Thursday to decide its stand on the July 19 presidential election, party sources said here.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar left Agartala Wednesday for Delhi to attend the meeting.
After the politburo meet, the CPI-M will discuss the issue with the Communist Party of India, Forward Bloc and Revolutionary Socialist Party, a CPI-M leader told IANS.
He indicated on condition of anonymity that the CPI-M favours supporting United Progressive Alliance (UPA) presidential candidate and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee.
Mukherjee had earlier telephoned Sarkar, former West Bengal Chief Minister Budhadeb Bhattacharjee, CPI-M West Bengal unit secretary Biman Bose, all politburo members, and sought the Left support.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has also urged CPI-M general secretary Prakash Karat seeking the Left support.
Meanwhile, the Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT), a Congres ally which has a member in the Tripura assembly, also welcomed the nomination of Mukherjee.
“We will vote for Mukherjee,” INPT president and lone legislator Bijoy Kumar Hrangkhawl told IANS.
