Fire at Lucknow hotel, no casualties

By IANS,

Lucknow : A major fire broke out in a three-star hotel here Monday, badly damaging its top floor before it was extinguished after a tough two-hour battle, police said. There were no casualties.

The fire started near the air duct on the sixth floor of Hotel Sagar International on Jopling Road and spread to the air conditioning unit, police said. Power snapped immediately and panicky hotel guests rushed out of the hotel.

With thick smoke in the hotel lobby and corridors, the rescue of hotel guests and staff became difficult.

Since the hotel houses three major restaurants on its premises, the fire department officials immediately began moving out the LPG cylinders out of the reach of the fire that grew every minute. Within no time, giant flames were seen coming out of the sixth floor and thick smoke engulfed the hotel and its surrounding areas.

However, the fire was eventually brought under control.

The hotel, owned by senior Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Akhilesh Das, is just a few metres away from the Butler Palace colony, which is home to several senior officials and ministers in the Mayawati government.
