“In almost every state, some education rights of the minorities are being violated,” Justice Siddiqui told reporters on the sidelines of a programme organised by the NCMEI’s “Committee on Girls Education” here.

He said the rights were being violated also in West Bengal and that he had apprised Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee about it.

“I apprised her (Banerjee) about the (educational) rights being violated by the officials of the education department. I complained to her that it appears that the officers have not been sensitised about the constitutional rights of the minorities,” he said.

“The chief minister has given an assurance that she would take care that no education rights of the minorities are violated,” he said.

The NCMEI is mandated to look into specific complaints regarding deprivation or violation of rights of minorities to establish and administer educational institutions of their choice. Protection of rights of minorities are enshrined in Article 30 of the Constitution which states that “all minorities, whether based on religion or language shall have the right to establish and administer educational institutions of their choice.”

The Commission can look into any complaints relating to violation and deprivation of the rights of minorities to establish and administer educational institutions of their choice.
